Lima Beans Fordhook No. 242
Their delicious flavor and high nutritional value make them a favorite with most cooks and an ideal addition to any meal. Enjoy fresh, dried, frozen, and canned. You can grow bush limas, which are small, self-supporting plants; or pole limas, which are tall, vigorous, productive vines. Plants 12-foot row.
When and where to plant
Select a sunny location and plant when all danger of frost is past and the soil has warmed. For best results, loosen soil with spade or fork, fertilize with vegetable food and smooth with rake. Firm soil over seed and keep moist. Plant bush types every 3 weeks.
Care
Support pole beans with poles, trellis, or fence. Water by soaking soil.
Harvesting
For fresh limas, pick as soon as beans begin to fill pod. To dry, leave pods on plants until partially dry, then pull plants and hang in a warm, dry, airy place until dry.
